A gray ooze is a gelatinous creature that lurks in damp and dark places, blending in with its surroundings. It appears as a shapeless mass of grayish sludge, constantly rippling and undulating. The ooze is highly corrosive and can dissolve organic matter upon contact.

Despite its lack of discernible features, the gray ooze is a formidable predator. It moves slowly but steadily, oozing along surfaces or dropping from ceilings to ambush unsuspecting prey. It possesses a remarkable ability to sense vibrations, allowing it to detect the presence of creatures nearby.

When threatened or disturbed, the gray ooze lashes out with pseudopods, attempting to engulf its target. Once it engulfs its prey, it begins to dissolve it with its corrosive body, quickly reducing it to a sludgy residue. The acidic nature of the ooze makes it resistant to many forms of damage.

Gray oozes are commonly found in underground tunnels, sewers, and other dark and dank locations. They feed on organic matter, including plants, animals, and even unsuspecting adventurers. Their ability to dissolve flesh and armor makes them a formidable threat.

Encountering a gray ooze requires caution and a keen eye, as its amorphous nature allows it to blend into its surroundings. Adventurers must rely on their senses and be prepared to defend against its corrosive attacks. Acid-resistant armor and weapons are particularly effective against these creatures.

It is worth noting that gray oozes can split into two smaller oozes when sufficiently damaged, making them even more difficult to eradicate. Careful handling and strategic tactics are crucial to overcoming these hazardous creatures.

Special Abilities

Amorphous

The ooze can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.

Corrode Metal

Any nonmagical weapon made of metal that hits the ooze corrodes. After dealing damage, the weapon takes a permanent and cumulative -1 penalty to damage rolls. If its penalty drops to -5, the weapon is destroyed. Nonmagical ammunition made of metal that hits the ooze is destroyed after dealing damage.
The ooze can eat through 2-inch-thick, nonmagical metal in 1 round.

False Appearance

While the ooze remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an oily pool or wet rock.

Actions

  • Pseudopod: Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) acid damage, and if the target is wearing nonmagical metal armor, its armor is partly corroded and takes a permanent and cumulative -1 penalty to the AC it offers. The armor is destroyed if the penalty reduces its AC to 10.
