Background Con Artist

Con Artist

You’ve spent years learning the art of deception, manipulation, and persuasion. The city streets, crowded marketplaces, and grand halls were your playgrounds, and every interaction was a lesson in human psychology. You're not a thief in the traditional sense—you don't need to be. You can separate a man from his gold through lies as easily as a pickpocket can with stealth.

Skill Proficiencies: Deception, Insight

Tool Proficiencies: Forgery Kit or Disguise Kit

Languages: 1 of your choice.

Equipment: A set of fine clothes, a disguise kit or a forgery kit, a small keepsake from someone you’ve deceived, a set of weighted dice, a pouch containing 20 gp

Starting Equipment

You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your class:

  • clothes, fine
  • (a) disguise kit or (b) forgery kit
  • dice set

Feature: Silver Tongue

You have a knack for acquiring information and favors from people. When in a settlement, you can use your network of contacts to gain access to a person or place related to your con artist activities. These individuals are generally non-hostile towards you, assuming you have not harmed them in the past. They can offer you information, give you simple tasks, or provide access to restricted areas, as long as doing so does not put them at significant risk. You can’t use this feature again in the same settlement for one week.

Suggested Characteristics

Con artists are, by necessity, quick thinkers and excellent judges of character. Their scams and ruses often require them to adopt different roles, making them skilled actors as well. At their best, they are resourceful and charismatic; at their worst, they are manipulative and untrustworthy.
